When they were spent, Ben held onto Sandra like he was lost at sea, and she was a floating piece of timber. Sandra held on to him, too. But as midnight rolled into the wee hours of the morning, she found sleep elusive. At a quarter till four a.m., Sandra had to drag herself from under Ben’s arm and leg so she could go to the bathroom.

Ben woke up and went looking for her fifteen minutes later. He saw the light shining under the bathroom door, but Sandra wouldn’t respond when he knocked. Even when he raised his voice and pounded with both fists, she remained mute. Ben forced the door open with a heavy shoulder and then a strong kick; right next to the doorknob.

He found Sandra sitting on the toilet with her shooter kit on the counter next to her. She was sweating profusely. She already had her tourniquet secured. Without looking up at Ben, Sandra poked a needle in her arm, found a vein, and pushed the plunger slowly, delivering enough heroin to get her through the rest of the night. When she was done, she calmly placed the needle on the counter, undid the tourniquet and met Ben’s eyes.

Ben’s bottom lip began to quiver. Sandra expected him to lecture her about how she was letting the devil win. But in a span of five seconds, Ben waged his own battle with Satan, and he too accepted defeat.

“Do, do you got some more?” he asked.

Sandra really didn’t have enough to share. But she knew they would get along better if Ben was high, too. She nodded towards the rest of her $20 pack, because the drug was raging through her system, and she couldn’t articulate her response.
